The Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg
The Palace of Mirabell and the huge Mirabell Gardens were built in 1606 by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. It was a present to his beloved Salome Alt, which gave birth to 15 children of whom 10 survived.
Due to the central location, the quaint planting, the cultural background, and the view to the Dom and the Fortress, it is one of the most favourite tourist attractions in Salzburg. The center of the Mirabell Garden is a big fountain, surrounded by four groups of statues. Each symbolizes an element – Fire, Water, Earth and Sky. The fountain in front of the Dom and the Fortress is one of the most famous pictures in Salzburg.
The 28 dwarfes that were built 300 years ago were placed all around the gardens. Later they were sold and could not be gathered again completely. Today most of them can be seen in the “Zwergerlgarten”.
The Palace of Mirabell
The Palace is nowadays the residence of the major of Salzburg and the city council. The Marmorsaal, in which Mozart and his father gave concerts to the upper class, is said to be one of the most beautiful places to hold a wedding. Conferences, acts of honor and concerts are equally held here.
