St. Sebastian Church & Cemetery in Salzburg
The St. Sebastian Church was a Gothic church when it was built 1505-1512. It is located in the Linzergasse where a cemetery for plague victims used to be before 1500. The patron of the church is Saint Sebastian who was said to be a defense against the plague.
To adjust the building to a more late baroque style the church was reconstructed in the years 1749-1753. After a conflagration in 1818 the church was rebuilt again. One of the things to do in Salzburg is to visit the wrought iron gate with its impressive iron roses, vases and shells which were preserved after the fire.
The steeple top is designed like an „onion tower“, which is very typical for catholic churches in Austria and Germany and means that the top of the dome resembles the shape of an onion.
Next to the entrance a statue of Saint Sebastian by the sculptor Josef Anton Pfaffinger can be seen. The figures of the saints Andreas, Petrus ans Paulus are located in the nave of the church and were made in the middle of the 18th century. A statue of Maria and a crucifix – both made in 1820 by Franz Seraphikus Nissl – are located in the atrium. The church organ was built in 1830 and was designed by Karl Mauracher.
The original high altar was made in 1750 but was later destroyed in the conflagration of 1818 and had to be rebuilt.
The Saint Philipp Neri Chapel, which is dated back to 1684, is connected to the St. Sebastian Church. In former years the chapel used to be the place of burial of the family of Bartolomä Bergamin, who was one of the great town master masons in Salzburg at that time.
