The Getreidegasse in Salzburg

The Getreidegasse in Salzburg is by far, the most famous street and ranges from the Alten Markt to Bürgerspitalgasse with St. Blasius Church.

Not only the high, narrow houses on both sides of the slender street are distinctive for the busy and popular shopping promenade, but also the wrought iron guild signs, that might be unique in their density and elegancy. Even international concerns such as Mc Donald or H&M had to adjust the logos in the street, to fit in the traditional style of the street. In addition, the passages to the streets running parallel, with their shops, cafes and courtyards shape the flair of the Getreidegasse. In medieval times, these passages were used, to clean the whole area around the Getreidegasse by redirecting the dammed up Almkanal through them.

The former Trabgasse was part of an important trade route into the today’s Bavaria. Passing merchants settled down in the 14. Century and formed it into a coveted location to live for the rich and important of Salzburg.

The by far most famous resident of the Getreidegasse was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In 1756 he was born in the Hagenauerhaus and spent the first seven years of his live with his family there. His first approaches into the world of music and composing, took place on the 3rd floor. Today, the Hagenauerhaus is known as Mozarts Geburtshaus (House of birth) and includes a museum, which deals with the Mozart family and the everyday life in the time. One of the first things to do in Salzburg is therefore to visit the Getreidegasse.
