Linzer Alley, Salzburg old Town
Other than the Getreidegasse, the Linzer Alley is one of the most popular streets in Salzburg. It was a major traffic pathway during the Roman Age and became the main street to Linz and the rest of Austria later on.
The Linzergasse leads from the “Platzl” at the Staatsbrücke up to the Franz-Josef-Straße, where it passes over to the Schallmooser Hauptstraße. From 1373 to 1894 it was ended by the Linzertor, which was part of the ancient city wall.
The most famous habitant of the Linzergasse was the doctor and scientist Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim called Paracelsus. He lived at the Platzl in the 1540s and is buried at the Sebastiansfriedhof a little bit up the Linzergasse.
Although heavy damaged by the great fire in 1818, many houses at the Platzl and on Linzergasse can be traced back to the 14th century. The habitants always had a special connection to the Linzergasse and therefore it is not surprising to see shops, merchants or craftsmen that carry on with the family business since more than a century.
If you climb up the stairs to the Capuchin monastery, starting from the Linzer Alley, a beautiful view over the whole historical city and the newer parts of Salzburg arises.
Today the Linzer Alley holds more than 140 shops and is due to its central location still one of the most famous street for shopping and Salzburg sightseeing.
