The Mozart Bicycle PathThe Mozart Bicycle Path

On the Trail of the Wunderknabe in County of Salzburg, Bavaria and Tyrol.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart dotted Salzburg with the places he called home or visited during his lifetime. And these dots are connected in the mosaic of historical Mozart Points right through the breathtaking countryside criss-crossed with lakes in Austria and Bavaria in the form of the Mozart Bicycle Path.

Bicycle sojourners will experience a mixture of stunning countryside, fresh air activities and reliving scenes of Mozart's life on this new bike path.

Let's start with the city of Salzburg where you can visit the house where Mozart was born and lived. Our bicycle path now moves past the Maria Plain Pilgrimage Church where Mozart's Coronation Mass was played in 1779. Then, leaving the Old Ischlerbahn route to Eugendorf, we take a small detour to St. Gilgen, where Mozart's mother was born and Nannerl, Mozart's sister, also has roots. Getting back on the bicycle route, we are spirited away past Henndorf through the Salzburg countryside with its myriad lakes to Neumarkt on the Wallersee Lake. There we can see the historical post tavern where Mozart spent the night (today Gerbl Inn). Our trail then entices us to spend time in the tourist village of Schleedorf or go to the Mattsee Lake with its imposing collegiate church and castle and its outdoor Bavarian theatre. Our last stop is Seeham to Obertrum am See with Trumer World and then onto Anthering.

The Salzach bridge between Oberndorf and Laufen is the starting point for the Bavarian section of our Mozart Bicycle Path. The points of interest for bicycle riders are the Waging Lake and Chiemsee Lake on the way to the Seeon Monastery that Wolfgang Amadeus frequently visited and composed music in. Wasserburg was another important way station in his life since he stopped here on his way to London and Paris in 1763 on a trip lasting 3 ½ years. Now the Mozart Bicycle Path fords the Inn River to Rosenheim and returns to Austria. Shortly before Kufstein we take a left turn to what is known as the Kaiserwinkel in Tyrol where our trail directs us to the banks of the Walchsee Lake. The cities of Waidring, Lofer (you can stay here overnight in the present-day Post Inn like Mozart did) and Bad Reichenhall are the next points of interest where this musical genius took his first rest on his trip to Italy. The final kilometres lead to Berchtesgaden, the Königssee Lake and past Hellbrunn Castle back to Salzburg.
