Mozartplatz - Mozart Square in Salzburg
The Mozartplatz close to the cathedral was built in 1588 by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. It was then called Michaelsplatz. Initially the place was dominated by a fountain with a statue of St. Michael on top. Nowadays, only the Michaelskirche, the oldest still existing church of the city, is reminiscent of the Michaelsplatz.
Across the street ran the main trade and traffic route in the former Salzburg. As a consequence of the construction of the Sigmundstor (Neutor) the square gained even more relevance.
In 1835 the writer Julius Schilling proposed to build a monument in honor of Mozart. Up to that year, the composer was almost unknown to the people of Salzburg. The proposal was above all supported by the Bavarian King Ludwig I and in Vienna. But the intention was delayed because an ancient mosaic was found under the surface of the square with the verdict “Hic habitat felicitas, nihil intret mali” (Happiness lives here, no harm may enter)
In September 1842 the monument was finished and unveiled in the presence of Mozart’s sons. His widow Constanze died a few months earlier in Mozartplatz 8. A plaque at the house reminds of her and the change from Michaelsplatz to Mozartplatz.
