Freilichtmuseum Salzburg – the open air museum

The Freilichtmuseum displays the former rural life with 70 original historical buildings from all five districts of the province of Salzburg on 50 hectares of beautiful natural environment. Further, the visitor is offered a large variety of different traditional handicraft businesses.

Experience the rural flair of former centuries

Nearly every builing can be entered. All original machines, mills, etc. are still working. Visit historical farms, an old school from the 19th century or a traditional brewery – there’s a lot going on in the open air museum Salzburg. On Sundays, you can also watch traditional craftsmen doing their work like it was done some hundred years ago. The chances to watch a smith shaping hot metal on an old anvil are rare – we definitely recommend watching it.

Exhibitions in the Freilichtmuseum

There are various constant and special exhibitions enriching the open air museum’s program. Take a look at antique tractors, learn about the development of the plough or enjoy a walk on the “butterfly path” with all its rare plants and animals.

For children, the Freilichtmuseum offers a large adventure playground with exciting and innovative constructions to play with.
