The Salzburg cathedral
In a city full of churches and ecclesial tradition, the baroque cathedral is Salzburg’s probably most important clerical building and an absolute must-see when doing sightseeing in Salzburg.
Since it was first built in 767 by bishop Virgil, the Salzburg cathedral has been burnt down a numerous times, just to be raised again even bigger and more impressive than before. This alone shows the high emotional bonding the people from Salzburg have with this building.
Considering the treasures kept in this church, this and the fact that a visit of the Salzburg cathedral is a must for tourists coming to Salzburg, aren’t very surprising: Countless christians have been baptized in the old big font from 1311. One of them being Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who later also was main organist in the Salzburg cathedral. The organ itself with its gigantic dimensions is another thing you should see, or even better: Hear.
While wandering through the great cathedral and looking up the walls and the big dome in the middle, you will inevitably see bits and pieces of art and architecture from many different centuries.
On the outside, the Salzburg cathedral attracts its visitors with many artistical statues and majestic baroque architecture. It is surrounded by some of Salzburg’s most famous squares such as the “Domplatz” where the Hugo von Hofmanthal’s “Jedermann” is played every year during the Salzburg festival or the “Residenzplatz” with its famous well and glockenspiel.
Visiting the cathedral with all its historical interesting aspects is one of the obligatory things to do in Salzburg. If you are searching for a hotel near Salzburg cathedral, send us your holiday enquiry now.
