Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg

The first thing you might see, when arriving in Salzburg, is most likely the Hohensalzburg Fortress on top of the Mönchsberg.

Since its first constructions in 1077 it is dominating the landscape and historical city beneath, as well as optically cultural. As the oldest fully preserved fortress in Central Europe, it is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Austria.

Ever since the construction of the first tower, that is still part of the fortress, in 1077, the fortress was constantly extended. The small castle grew into an invulnerable fortress and withstood every siege. Only the French troops took the city and the fortress without fight during the Napoleonic wars. When they abandoned the castle it became dilapidated. This and a fire led to the decision that the castle had to be renovated in 1851. Since that it was used as barracks.

In 1892 the Festungsbahn was built to make the fortress accessible for tourism. One of the first things to do in Salzburg is therefore mounting the Mönchsberg. The view across Salzburg and the surrounding landscape from the outer facilities is truly amazing. Guided tours through the fortress lead you through 10 centuries of change and history.
