Mozart‘s Residence
The Mozart’s Residence in Salzburg is first mentioned in 1617. It is also known as the „Tanzmeisterhaus“, a place where Lorenz Speckner as well as his son Franz Karl Gottlieb gave dancing lessons to the children of aristocrats.
It was also Franz Speckner who was one of the groomsmen at the wedding of Wolfgang Amadeus’ parents in 1747.
When Wolfgang Amadeus was a child the family lived on the 3rd floor of the „Hagenauer Haus“, which is located in today’s Getreidegasse 9. To have more room for the family to live and for Amadeus to work in, the family moved to the house that is today known as Mozart’s Residence at Makartplatz 8 (formally known as Hannibalplatz) in 1773.
In the years 1773-1780 Mozart composed among others "Re pastore" KV 208, parts of "La Finta giardiniera" KV 196 and "Idomeneo" KV 366.
After Wolfgang’s father Leopold Mozart died in 1787, the house belonged to various owners. During the Second World War the residence was severely destroyed.
In the following years the International Mozarteum Foundation used old construction plans to reconstruct the former rooms of the family‘s domicile and introduced the Mozart’s Residence as a museum to the public on the 26th January 1996. The former domicile of the Mozarts has become one of the most important Salzburg tourist attractions.
