The Salzburg Residence
The Salzburg Residence used to be the city palace of the Archbishops of Salzburg and is one of the greatest Salzburg tourist attractions of today. It comprises 180 rooms and was used by the bishops not only for a place to live, but also to emphasise their spiritual and secular power.
In 1775 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed his violin concerto in A-major for the first time at the Residence – it was a concert for the prince-archbishop of that time.
Before 1120 all the bishops of Salzburg used to live at the rather small St. Peter Abbey. In the year 1124 Konrad I. wanted to have a bigger place to stay. He decided, that a new domicile shall be built at the place that is the east wing of today‘s Salzburg Residence. This section has later been pulled down by the Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, who then ordered to build a new Residence in a Renaissance-style.
At first the Residence was only used as a domicile for the bishops of Salzburg, later until around 1918 the members of the Austrian imperial family lived there as well. Since 1992 the faculty of law of the University of Salzburg is located at the Toscanian section of the building.
One of Salzburg sightseeing favorites is the Residence gallery, which is located on the 3rd floor and contains a comprehensive collection of paintings by European artists of the 16th-19th centuries.
