St. Peter Abbey
If you are going on a Salzburg sightseeing tour be sure not to miss St. Peter Archabbey in Salzburg as it is the oldest monastery in the German-speaking area.
It contains the oldest Austrian library and also the oldest restaurant – the Stiftskeller St. Peter – first being mentioned in records in the year 803. The abbey has been founded by the Saint Rupert in 696. As there were parts of an older building found underneath the church, historians assume that there had been an ancient church before the abbey was built. The church as it can be seen today was built in 1125-1143. Parts of the steeple date from the 9th century, the main organ was built in 1444. Tourist attractions in the St. Peter Abbey are the gothic cross-ribbed vault in the atrium as well as the baroque onion-domed tower constructed in 1756.
In the Middle Ages the St. Peter Abbey in Salzburg was best known for its writing school. Since 1927 St. Peter is an Archabbey. During the Second World War the monks were expelled, right after the war the monks were allowed to return.
Associated to St. Peter’s is the Marien-chapel which is believed to be the oldest remained gothic building in Salzburg. One of the things to do in Salzburg is to visit the cemetery of St. Peter’s where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s sister, Maria Anna Mozart (Nannerl), is buried. Together with the cemetery at Nonnberg Abbey the graveyard of St. Peter’s is the oldest cemetery in the city of Salzburg.
