The Tauern Bicycle Path

Where the Krimml Waterfalls (the highest waterfalls in Central Europe) roar into the deep is the point of departure for one of the most attractive trails in Salzburg.

You take a breathtaking detour riding along the Salzach River at the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park with the Glockner-Kaprun and Grossglocken Reservoirs. Then you continue to the reservoirs of the Pongau Salzach Power Station where beautiful bicycle paths have been built in the last few years. Don't forget to take in the Romantic Liechtensteinklamm or the Ice Giant World, the largest ice cave in the world, and Hohenwerfen Castle.

Then we cycle past the Romantic Gollingen waterfalls to the old Hallein, home to Celts and the salt mining industry (remember to take the interesting tour to the local salt mine). You can see the Hohensalzburg Fortified Castle from afar projecting high above the Old Town of Salzburg with its oversized squares and winding alleys. You can get a spectacular view directly from your bicycle path along the Salzach River, although you have the same vantage point if you cycle through the Saalachtal Valley. You arrive back in the city of Mozart by taking the entirely new bicycle path between the cities of Saalfelden and Lofer when passing Stiegl's World of Brewing, a brewery set up as a learning museum. This also gives you a magnificent tour.

The Tauern Bicycle Path further north leads through the peaceful Salzach and Inn River meadows at whose banks the old shipper's market Oberndorf, Gothic Braunau, the 1,000-year-old Obernberg, the Augustinian Church of Reichersberg, the baroque city of Schärding, Wernstein Castle and the "Three-River City of Passau", where we have arrived at our destination.
